Me: “So, what do you wanna do tonight?”

Him: “Well, there is that show at Antone’s you were talking about and the UFC.”

Me: “Yeah, I guess I don’t much feel like going out…”

Him: “Ok, let’s have the UFC at the house.”

Me: “Ok. Should we get some stuff at the store?”

Him: “Yup.”

And so, it was…last minute audible to have friends over for the UFC.  As you may suspect (from my previous post about training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu), I kind of follow MMA, submission grappling, etc.  I was pretty excited about this card…UFC 92….Wanderlei Silva Vs. Quinton Jackson, Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira Vs. Frank Mir (usually…I don’t have goofy crushes…but I think I actually salivate when watching Mir fight…see picture below…also enjoy listening to his WEC commentary), and Forrest Griffin Vs. Rashad Evans.  Wish they would’ve shown the Yushin Okami Vs. Dean Lister and Ryo Chonan Vs. Brad Blackburn fights on the PPV.  I really dig Ryo Chonan, Okami, and Lister as well, but of course we are alternately forced to watch TUF lovelies CB Dollaway (BLECK!) and Matt Hamill.  Oh, and there’s always airtime for the man I SHOULD have a crush on – Cheick Kongo (with his lovely French accent, superb striking, yet abysmal ground game).  Who knows – maybe he has developed more ground game but hasn’t utilized it yet.  The few minutes I’ve seen him on the ground in previous fights turned my BJJ stomach a bit.

Anywho, great to see Evans, Mir, and Jackson win (and what a wild knockout of Wanderlei).

All in all a pretty fun evening with friends.  I think it was Mike Massenzio that came in wearing a black Full Contact Fighter t-shirt…and I thought to myself, I have one of those exact shirts.  Of course, I have no idea where it is…seeing that I usually wore it to or from class or the gym.  I remember stopping in a Starbucks once, and I was wearing this t-shirt.  The barista looked at me and said, “So, you’re a fighter??”  Then, he proceed to try and tell me about some ‘cage fighter’ friend of his.

At first, we thought we wanted to see all the craziness…we got into a Best Buy parking lot…there were shennanigans about a parking space…we left to see a movie without going into any stores. We figured some crazy chick wagging her finger at us over a space that wasn’t “hers” and that we weren’t going to park in was “crazy” enough. After the movie, we went to a more remote Best Buy and checked out some of the specials.

That was when I first laid eyes on the Insignia® – 5.0MP High-Definition Digital Camcorder with 3″ Swivel LCD Screen for $99. Since The Man is so in the know regarding nearly everything technology, I asked him to take a look at the camera. He hadn’t heard anything about it except that it was Best Buy’s house brand. He did some cursory searching on the internet in the the store, but didn’t find much. We left without purchasing the camcorder, but that’s the moment I started wanting the camcorder. My digital camera can capture video…but it’s kind of cumbersome and certainly not up to 720p high definition. I had been thinking about the Flip Video MinoHD Camcorder, but was really turned off by the only memory being internal. So, this Insignia really peeked my interest b/c of the internal memory AND secure digital high capacity memory card slot. Unfortunately, the Insginia camera went back up to $149 after “Black Friday”. For a few weeks I pined…then I finally caved and purchased. Interestingly enough, a few days after I caved the price went down again. The Man noticed this when we were shopping for a SDHC card. Fortunately, Best Buy has a price matching/price guarantee policy and they were happy to pull up my original receipt and refund me the price difference (we didn’t have the receipt on hand b/c we didn’t go into the store knowing that the camera was now on sale…I think generally they ask you to bring in your original receipt). We also got a great price on a SanDisk Ultra 8GB Secure Digital High Capacity Memory Card for $34.99.

EXCITING HUH?!?!

I was inspired to record us walking into to Target by iJustine‘s tweet about getting kicked out of target for filming…but I didn’t actually take any video IN Target.

So far, I’m pretty impressed with this toy. (Especially considering the price!) I will have to post an actual “interesting” video…but I have yet to captured one – being busy with finishing beauty school, work, holidays, etc. OH, and it’s probably important to note that it wasn’t exactly “plug and play” with my Mac. I did some research and this guy’s review really helped me a lot – and now I can edit the files in iMovie HD.

I don’t know when I lost my loyalty, really…maybe when I moved back to College Station with all the lame radio stations there.  Then, of course I lived in Washington, DC…Houston…I didn’t make it back around to Austin again til 2001…only to move to Dallas in 2002…Back in Austin (again…thankfully) by 2004…but I didn’t get back into the 101X groove.

So, I had to get a new car battery a few weeks ago.  That meant resetting the clock and the radio presets.  I have 6 main preset buttons.  Since, one of my presets had previously been I think it was 104.9 (a hip hop station that in the middle of the day became a Spanish pop station) I had a new slot available…and I put 101X there thinking it would be on probationary status…Well, I’ve decided to let it stay.  It’s a bit like reminiscing.

The other day this song came on, and it’s been stuck in my head ever since.

I’ve always been awed by star-gazing.  Quite frankly, I don’t remember the last time I did!  So, I decided it’s high time…and that I should make up for lost time in grand style (OF COURSE!)…

So, I’m officially announcing to The Man…that I’d really like to take a trip out to the McDonald Observatory.  I’m thinking ASAP before the schedule gets all crazy again.  Like say January 3 or 10…hehe.

They have an Evening Star Party.  Something that sounds even more interesting, but requires a reservations is the Special Viewing Night on the 36 inch research telescope.  Looks like available dates for January include the 16th, 23rd, and 24th.

I haven’t really talked about this here…actually, I haven’t talked about much here (especially recently haha).  So, I guess it’s all new anyway.  To make a long story short – I started training brazilian jiu-jitsu on Friday, December 2, 2005.  I got my blue belt exactly a year later – December 2, 2006.  Training got kind of hazy for me in the summer of 2007 – various issues abounded.  Primarily, I left my job of nearly 3 years, and decided to venture into a world of working mulitple jobs and going to school to become a licensed esthetician.  So, it became pretty near impossible to coordinate training into the hectic mix.  The Man kept training pretty diligently.  I however, have been fat and idle since like September 07.  It feels more like 2 years than just a bit over one.

At first, I was glad to be free of some of the discipline.  Gradually, I think I started to miss things…first it was my training partners…then it was just being in shape and active…then it was vaguely actually the bjj techniques and stimulation.  I tried to block that out…like I could just take up another hobby to replace it.  Truthfully, I would love to train again.  Deep down, I know that…but I haven’t wanted to admit it.  Mostly, because I know how much it will UTTERLY SUCK to go back and start over again.  Sure, it’s like riding a bike…I will get it back.  Yeah, yeah.  Trust me, it will suck, and it will frustrate the hell out of me to have my body fail me when my mind wants it to do something…  And once you’re out of the habit – it’s SO easy to find every excuse and alternate opportunity to NOT train (bjj wannabes, posers, politics, etc…)

Finally, something cut through all that for me the other day.  I still keep up with the ins and outs of grappling, bjj, and mma…and for some reason I was looking at Penny Thomas videos on youtube.

Penny Thomas is a BJJ black belt, and I had the opportunity to see her compete at the BJJ Pan-American Championship in 2006 (as a purple belt) and again in 2008 (as a brown belt).  She is truly an inspiration to watch.  Even more so, I’m incredibly drawn in by the contrast between her skill level in the video where she is a blue belt versus her video as a black belt.  Clearly, there is so much to learn and fine tune in bjj.  THAT is what I have been missing.  The quest of personal improvement…I know it won’t be entirely possible to start training again and avoid all of the stuff that I don’t like (the wannabes, posers, politics, etc…) but it’s worth getting back on the path of personal improvement.  Since all of my crazy schedule issues will largely be resolved by the end of the year, I guess I will have to take my blue belt out of my truck (where it’s been since I last trained in like Sept 07…and the source of many a joke) and get back on the mat.

I also start my holiday job on Monday…I’ve only been gone from my previous post like 6 work days…I haven’t noticed absence making my heart grow fonder. Actually, I have been quite pleased with my time away!!

Nevertheless, with holidays, old/new jobs, finishing school, scheduling and taking state boards…I have the climax of transition going on. So, I will try to update with more interesting beer and beauty notes as soon as I can…
